ARTHUR'S PASS

The township is 737 metres above sea level and 153km from Christchurch to the northwest. It is on the Canterbury side of the main divide of the Southern Alps. Road access to Arthur's Pass from Christchurch is via State Highway 73 and is well sign-posted. The Trans Alpine Train travels daily check bus services from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass and the West Coast.

ASHBURTON DOMAIN

1km east of the Williams Street Bridge in Kaiapoi and 19km north of Christchurch, on the banks of the Kaiapoi River.

ASHLEY GORGE DOMAIN

Ashley Gorge Domain is a delightful riverside place on the upper reaches of the Ashley River, 10km north of Oxford, and 64km from Christchurch. From Christchurch to Rangiora and on to Loburn. Then head west following the well sign posted directions to Ashley Gorge. Travel through the gorge by road to view Lees Valley a reasonably rough road for a car, but one can drive out via Okuku Pass to North Loburn. There are a couple of fords involved

BALMORAL STATE FOREST

Balmoral State Forest picnic area lies on the banks of the Hurunui River and alongside State Highway 7, 12km north of (he township of Waikari and 90km north of Christchurch. Sheltered in a pleasant area of pines.

BARNETT PARK

In Christchurch on the lower valley slopes and valley floor between Moncks Bay and Monks Spur. Entrance adjacent to Main Road, Moncks Bay opposite Sea Cadets Training Ship. 10km from Cathedral Square via Worcester Street, Barbadoes Street, Ferry Road and Main Road Redcliffs.

BARRHILL

7km west of Rakaia township and 76km south west of Christchurch. Via State Highway 1 from Christchurch to Rakaia then turn west along Barrhill Road for 16.5km. A small settlement of a few holiday homes and a small church origionaly intended as the "Village" for a local farm. There are spectacular views from high over the mid Rakaia River.

BOTANIC GARDENS

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens provide a haven of lawns, trees, plants and ponds in the heart of Christchurch City, 1km from Cathedral Square. Covering 30 hectares and adjacent to Hagley Park (148 hectares), the gardens have something for everyone. From The Square in the city centre travel north along Colombo Street to Armagh Street. Turn left into Armagh Street and continue on to the 'Gardens' carpark. Alternative parking off Hagley Avenue.

BIRDLINGS FLAT

Banks Peninsula 45km from Christchurch along Slate Highway 75. At the foot of Lake Forsyth. Travel on the Christchurch-Akaroa highway through Motukarara. The Birdlings Flat turnoff is on your right just before Lake Forsyth. A must visit for stone or pebble collectors, watch the surf as it can catch the unwary. Do not attempt to drive your car on the shingle stick to the formed roads.

CAMP BAY

Banks Peninsular 39km from Christchurch, on the south side of Lyttelton Harbour. The beach may be approached by the main road around the harbour sealed to Purau, then by 4km of unsealed road direct to the beach. Well worth a visit to see the fauna and rock formations of this small bay.

CANTERBURY PIONEER WOMENS MEMORIAL

Summit Road at the top of the Bridle Path 8.5km from the Sign of the Kiwi travelling east or 6.5km from the Evans Pass Road and Summit Road intersection travelling west. Prior to the formation of the Sumner Road and the Lyttelton Rail Tunnel the only access to Christchurch was via this path or ship over the Sumner Bar.

Bounded by Broken River and State Highway 73, it is Christchurch via Springfield .107km from Christchurch Travel west along State Highway 73 approximately 600m from the Broken River Bridge, then a sharp right hand turn at the rise of the following hill, to the parking area.

CHAMBERLAINS FORD Old Bridge Road

Chamberlain's Ford Domain is situated on the Selwyn River 32km south of Christchurch and 13km north of Leeston on the Leeston-Lincoln road. From Christchurch travel via Shands or Springs Road towards Leeston. As you cross the Selwyn River the main picnic area can be seen on your right. Access is a further 700 metres on.

CHEVIOT HILLS DOMAIN

Cheviot, 122km north of Christchurch, by State Highway 1. Once the home of "Ready Money Robinson" stood in this reserve. It was destroyed by fire some years ago, but the foundations may still be seen. It is well planted with many fine specimens of English trees. There is an attractive cricket ground and many sheltered spots for a break. Turn right off State Highway 1 at the southern end of Cheviot Township. Sealed highway followed by 1 km of shingle road to the domain. Only a few minutes from the main road. Well worth planning your visit do see the spring flowers.

CHURCH BAY

Banks Peninsular 30km from Christchurch, on the south side of Lyttelton Harbour. From Christchurch via either the Lyttelton Road Tunnel or Dyers Pass Road. From the main harbour road do not approach the beach via Athol Terrace as this is private land and gated. Access is via the public track off Marine Drive above the jetty. Final access to the beach is via 420 metres of walking track, not sign-posted.

COOPERS CREEK Mountain Road, Oxford Forest

State Highway 72 From Christchurch travel north on to the motorway and follow the signs to Oxford. Travel through the township and follow the signs to Coopers Creek. Pass through Coopers Creek and on to the carpark, which is signposted. 62km north west of Christchurch and foothills of the Puketeraki Range or 8km west of Oxford. From Christchurch to Oxford. Continue along the main road through the township to Woodside Road. Turn right, then 6km to the creek. Cross the bridge and turn to the right; the car park is 1km at the end of the road. (Unsealed roads.)

CORSAIR BAY (Motukauatiiti)

Governors Bay Road 14km from Christchurch on the north side of Lyttelton Harbour. From Christchurch via Lyttelton Road Tunnel, and turn right towards inner harbour and Governor's Bay; or via Dyers Pass Road, Sign of the Takahe, Sign of the Kiwi, and turn left towards Lyttelton at the bottom of the descent just before Governor's Bay. A very popular swimming spot in summer.

Teddington Purau Road Banks Peninsular 35 kms from Christchurch drive through the Lyttelton Road tunnel and follow the Governors Bay Road around the bays to Diamond Harbour. Alternatively drive over Dyers Pass and go right following Governors Bay Road around to Diamond Harbour. Alternatively, leave your car at Lyttelton and catch the Diamond Harbour Ferry across the harbour.

Situated near the corner of Ferry Road and Aldwins Road the Gardens are on the "town" side of this intersection next to the Mobil service station, which is built on the factory site.

ELLANGOWAN SCENIC RESERVE

A hilltop bush reserve on the east coast of Banks Peninsula, 6km from Akaroa. 90km from Christchurch. From Christchurch to Akaroa via State Highway 75. Turn off 1km before Akaroa township up the Long Bay Road to reach the Summit Road (both sealed) then I km down the Hickory Bay Road (unsealed) from the cabstand intersection.

Flea Bay Akaroa A little known bay near Akaroa the second night on the Banks Penninsular track. Remains can be seem of earthworks on the south side of the bay. Take the Lighthouse Road up Almers Hill out of Akaroa, this is a very steep but sealed road up to a shingle road when the grade flattens. This trip should not be attempted in a 2wd in wet weather.

FRENCH FARM BAY Wainui Main Road Banks Peninsular

Travel on Akaroa Road to the Barry's Bay, turn right into Wainui Main Road and travel 2 kms.

FOX'S CREEK

Located by the Okuku River near Mt Thomas, about 52km from Christchurch fox's Creek is a rugged, mountain stream, picnic spot with a stand of native bush. water, swimming and trout fishing are provided by the Okuku River. The last few kilometres are on a shingle road with a gate (near the picnic site), which must be closed after passing.

On Banks Peninsula to the west of Akaroa Harbour, 3km south of Barry's Bay and 74km south-cast of Christchurch. State Highway 75 from Christchurch to Barry's Bay; then turn south towards Wainui. Sealed roads.

GODLEY HEAD FARM PARK AND WALKWAY Godley Head Road

Godley Head Farm Park is located 20km by road, south east of Christchurch. The land forms the northern headland at the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour. Access to the Farm Park is by car from either Lyttelton or Sumner to the junction of the Sumner Summit and Evans Pass roads. At this point Godley Head is signposted and is a further 6km. Access to the Walkway is also available from Taylor's Mistake via Boulder Bay (see Taylor's Mistake entry). The 3 1/2 hour circular walk from the carpark to the heads, Taylors Mistake and the summit is moderately difficult, but superb for its variety of seascapes. The military installations are open, but the lighthouse access closed. You may also visit Taylor battery closer to Boulder Bay Take a torch to visit the Gunnery installations on the Head. The Guns were removed in the 1950's however the concrete emplacements are well preserved. This includes the ammunition storage rooms below ground level.

GORE BAY

North Canterbury, 123km north of Christchurch, 8km south east of Cheviot. Travel the Main North Highway to Cheviot, turn right at the signpost McQueen Road and travel 8km to Gore Bay. State Highway 1 from Christchurch to Cheviot then 8km from Cheviot to Gore Bay along the Gore Bay Road. You can vary your route by returning along the coast via Port Robinson, the Hurunui-Port Robinson Road, and rejoining State Highway 1 1km north of Domett. The eroded Clay cliffs at the southern end of the beach are well worth a visit.

14 km from Christchurch, on the north side of Lyttelton Harbour. Sage Reserve A coastal hillside reserve with a remnant kanuka stand. Located 1km south of the Governors Bay wharf, Governors Bay may be reached from Christchurch via Dyers Pass Road, the Sign of the Takahe, and the Sign of the Kiwi. If time permits take the walk along the foreshore to Allandale

GREY RIVER (MT GREY)

Within Ashley State Forest, 50km from Christchurch. From Christchurch, travel via State Highway 72 to Rangiora (27km) then 2km north across the Ashley River. First turn right past Ashley River Bridge, then second turn left. Signposted lo Ashley State Forest. Sealed road to the forest headquarters. Final 15km on a metalled road to the Grey River. Due to forest fire danger, a permit may be required to enter the forest. Obtainable from the forest headquarters, Ashley.

GROYNES Johns Road Christchurch

An extensive man-made picnic area adjacent to the south branch of the Waimakariri River, on Johns Road. It is 12km from the centre of Christchurch and less than 2km from the Main North Road at Belfast. The Waimairi Walkway extends from the Groynes to Darroch Street in Belfast. Brochure available, published by the Department of Lands and Survey. Road access to the Groynes is from Johns Road near its northern end. From central Christchurch take the Main North Road out of Christchurch and turn left into Johns Road at Belfast. Residents in the western suburbs of Christchurch may find it easier to take the Russley Road-Johns Road route.

HAGLEY PARK

Located in Central Christchurch, Hagley Park is divided into two sections! (North and South) by Riccarton Avenue. It is within 1km of Cathedral Square.

HALSWELL DOMAIN

Halswell Domain is a pleasant public domain on State Highway 75, on the Christchurch side of Halswell Township. Travelling from Christchurch city it is just 2km past the south west boundary of the city, 8km from Cathedral Square. From Christchurch City access is via Lincoln Road and State Highway 75.

HANMER SPRINGS

126km north of Christchurch via State Highways 1 and 7. Turn off to Hanmer Springs from the Lewis Pass Road (State Highway 7), crossing the Waiau Ferry Bridge to reach the Hanmer basin. A popular spot with hot springs being one of the main attractions.

HANMER FOREST

Jollies Pass Road the pass is recommended 4wd only, Jacks pass for 2wd. It is well worth the trip and perhaps heading for Island saddle with a visit to Lake Tennyson on the way. A number of walks leave this area and they range from the easy Dog Stream Track (1/2 hour) or Woodland Walk (3/4 hour) to the longer tramp to Mt Isabel (5 hours). A well grassed and maintained picnic area has been developed behind the local Information Centre, (which is open 364 days) and is sheltered. Magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and forest can be enjoyed when you visit this picnic spot.

HANMER FOREST PARK

The Hanmer Forest Park Information Centre picnic area is on Jollies Pass Road, 1km from Hanmer township, or 137km north of Christchurch. From Christchurch take State Highway 1 to the Waipara River, then State Highway 7 to the Hanmer Springs turn-off and then a few kilometres to Hanmer Township.

HANMER RIVER

126km north of Christchurch via State Highways 1 and 7. Turn off to Hanmer Springs from the Lewis Pass Road (State Highway 7), crossing the Waiau Ferry Bridge to reach the Hanmer basin. The picnic area is on the banks of the Hanmer River 8km from Hanmer Springs. A shingle turn-off road at the road bridge for a short distance from the main road. There is also a rough track down to the banks of the Waiau River.

HANMER SPRINGS — DOG STREAM

134km north of Christchurch, via State Highway 1 to the Waipara River, and then State Highway 7 until the Hanmer turn-off. For picnicking, vehicles are best parked at the end of Bath Street, with a short walk to the stream. When approaching Hanmer Township from State Highway 7, Bath Street is on your right.

HANMER SPRINGS DOMAIN

Hanmer is 134km north of Christchurch. The Domain is on the corner of Jacks Pass Road and Argelins Road, and is less than a kilometre from the Hanmer Post Office. From Christchurch take State Highway 1 to the Waipara River, Then State Highway 7 to the Hanmer Springs turn-off, and a few kilometres to Hanmer Township. Turn left at the Hanmer Post Office.

HAWDON RIVER

Hawdon River is located near Arthur's Pass Park Board Shelter, approximately 140km west of Christchurch. Drive to the site from the West Coast Road (State Highway 73), about 5km past Cass. HAYS BAY

Christchurch 28km, on Banks Peninsula, on the south side of Lyttelton Harbour. From Christchurch via the Lyttelton Road Tunnel or Dyers Pass Road, through Governors Bay and Teddington. Beach access is via a 300 metre-walking track from the main road above Charteris Bay.

5.5K To Duvauchelle Christchurch 76k 6km south of Pigeon Bay township on Banks Peninsula and 76km from Christchurch. From Christchurch, travel via State Highway 75 to the Hilltop Junction and down the Pigeon Bay Road until 6km From Pigeon Bay. Alternative route via Governors Bay following the coastal road to Pigeon Bay, then 6km further south along the Pigeon Bay Road. Signposted at entrance.

HIKURAKI BAY

On Banks Peninsula, 71km from Christchurch via Little River. 58km via Birdlings Flat when route is open. From Christchurch, State Highway 75 to Little River; then Okuti Valley Road, Te Oka Bay Road and Magnet Bay Road. Alternatively, State Highway 75 to Birdlings Flat then, if Lake Forsyth outlet is closed, you can drive to Bossu Road, Te Oka Bay Road and Magnet Bay Road. Either way you have 1km of walking track through private property, from Magnet Bay to Hikuraki Bay. Once you leave State Highway 75, most of the route is shingle, steep and at times rough.

HOON HAY PARK

In Christchurch, by the Summit Road on outer crater rim at head of Hoon Hay Valley. 1.6km south of the Sign of the Kiwi and 11.6km from Cathedral Square via Colombo Street, Dyers Pass Road, and Summit Road. Immediately south of Marley's Hill (which has Post Office radio telephone aerials on summit). Via Summit Road. Cars may enter and park on the grass within the reserve. Pedestrian access via walking track from the Sign of the Kiwi or from end of Worsley's Road via Worsley's Track (5.2km).

58k from Christchurch travel west on State Highway 73 to Aylesbury and then turn left into Bealey Road and travel on to Hororata. The domain is located on your right as you travel from the township towards the Golf Course, (signposted)

HURUNUI DOMAIN/BALMORAL RECREATION AREA

Hurunui River, Balmoral Forest

From Christchurch travel north through Amberley and take the Lewis Pass turn off at Waipara Junction. Travel through the Weka Pass and on to the Hurunui River. This spot is located on the northern side of the Hurunui River. Turn left 500 metres after crossing the Hurunui River Bridge. Access to the river is 400 metres further on from the picnic and camping area.

HURUNUI GORGE

113km from Christchurch below where the Hurunui River forks into the North and South branches. State Highway 1 to Waipara from Christchurch. State Highway 7 to Waikari turnoff. Follow main road from Waikari to Hawarden to Horsley Downs, then take the Waitohi Gorge Road to the Lake Sumner Road. The gorge is approximately 30km from the Waitohi River Bridge, the latter on an unsealed, narrow road.

HURUNUI RIVER MOUTH Domett

114km north of Christchurch from Christchurch travel north to Domett on State Highway 1 and then turn right (east) along 8km of good sealed road followed by 1km of unsealed road.

JELLIE PARK

This 12-hectare park lies between Greers Road and Ham Road, Christchurch, and has the Waimairi Stream as its north eastern boundary. It is easily accessible to residents in the north western part of the city and is about 6km from Cathedral Square. Access is available from either Greers Road or Ham Road a short distance north east of Memorial Avenue.

KAIAPOI RIVERBANKS

Kaiapoi River, adjacent to Charles Street in Kaiapoi, 20km north of Christchurch. Northern motorway from Christchurch to Kaiapoi; south off-ramp onto Ohoka Road; then Williams Street to Charles Street.

KAIK-ONUKU (The Kaik) Akaroa

5km beyond Akaroa on Banks Peninsula and 88km from Christchurch. From Christchurch, State Highway 75 to Akaroa. Then follow the signs from Akaroa township along the unsealed road to the Kaik-Onuku. An interesting church and meeting house in the bay.

Travel on the Christchurch-Akaroa Highway 75 through Tai Tapu and Motukarara. Kaituna Valley is signposted from the highway Turn left into Kaituna Valley Road from State Highway 75 and then proceed 5km to car park.

This area must be treated with respect. The Pa was besieged in 1832 a cannibal feast was held on the beach at Barry’s Bay where a number of the defenders were eaten. Beach access is by foot for 50 metres across private land.

TUMBLEDOWN BAY

Tumbledown Bay is on Banks Peninsula, 70km from Christchurch. Access is via State Highway 75 (Christchurch to Akaroa) turn right just before Little River into Okuti Valley Road and then Te Oka Bay Road. There is then a very steep climb and descent, and Tumbledown Bay is immediately before Te Oka Bay. Some of the road is unsealed and corrugated. There is roadside parking only and a walk of approximately 1 km across cattle paddocks to the beach.

WRECK BAY

35km from Christchurch, on Banks Peninsula, on the south side of Lyttelton Harbour. Part of Purau. From Christchurch either Lyttelton Road Tunnel or Dyers Pass Road. The beach may be approached by the main road around the harbour sealed to Purau, then by I km of unsealed road. Primary access could be by boat, there being good launching facilities at Purau, the large bay of which Wreck Bay is a part.

Yaldhurst Bush

Entrance on Old West Coast Road, near the Main West Coast Rd turn-off.  a lovely little park with lots of native plantings, and now a meandering stream through it and little bridges - a delightful spot.

Travel past Yaldhurst township, turn to right down Old West Coast Road, entrance is on the left only a few hundred metres along.   

YALDHURST DOMAIN

11 km from Cathedral Square, School Road, Yaldhurst. State Highway 73 from Christchurch. Turn right near Yaldhurst Hotel to get into School Road, and the Domain. There are several tennis courts here, new toilets, and extended playground area.
